Artifact Dance Project: Monologue of a Muted Man

May 11 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Founding Co-artistic Directors Ashley Bowman and Claire Hancock have cultivated Artifact’s reputation for working with artists, musicians and composers. Monologue of a Muted Man is a quintessential example of how the directors deeply value the importance of collaboration.

Together, they will radicalize playwright Patrick Baliani’s Monologue of a Muted Man for dance. Ashley capitalizes on Claire’s dual strengths as a professional dancer and actor to choreograph the title role of the “the man” who is desperate to love a deaf woman he encounters in Venice while losing his own hearing and, as a result, his sense of self.

Artifact is pleased to work with actor Robert Anthony Peters, a member of SAG- AFTRA, who has been acting, producing, directing, and writing professionally in theater, film, voiceover, and more for over a decade. Robert is fully integrated within the staging and choreography and, together with Claire, enables the audience to focus on the main character while experiencing the reality of those around him. Composer and pianist Russell Ronnebaum creates an original score for piano, which he performs live. Lighting Designer Josh Hemmo returns to Artifact with his sophisticated style to give Monologue of a Muted Man yet another layer of artistry.

Buffalo Exchange is providing Artifact with bags and bags of clothing to cover the entire performance floor as a malleable and symbolic set piece. The audience is seated in the round in Ina Gittings Studio 124, located just west of the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre.
