Hospital’s History
Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital celebrates its
130-year anniversary in 2010. Carondelet St. Mary’s
history is filled with a rich heritage of serving this community. When the
original seven Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet first came to Tucson
following a perilous 36-day journey from St. Louis, Missouri, in 1870, it was
with the intention of helping to provide education for residents. Faced with
the greater need for a hospital, the Sisters’ commitment to serve became a
reality when they established St. Mary’s, the first hospital in the state of
Arizona in 1880 -- with 11 beds, 4 sister-nurses and one doctor. Today, it is a
402-bed facility with nearly 2000 associate employees and more than 400
physicians and health professionals caring for patients. Carondelet St. Mary’s
has one of the region’s largest and most advanced Emergency Centers and is seen
as a vital healthcare provider for both stroke and cardiac care.

Hospital’s History
Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital is an acute
care facility founded in 1961 to help meet the health care needs of Tucson’s
growing eastside. In 1983, Carondelet St. Joseph’s merged with Carondelet St.
Mary’s Hospital, sharing their management services and supplies and became part
of Carondelet Health Network. The Carondelet St. Joseph’s campus provides
comprehensive services in neurosciences, heart, vascular, orthopedics,
rehabilitation and women’s care services. Carondelet St. Joseph’s is home to
Carondelet Neurological Institute, founded in 2008, the largest and most
comprehensive facility in Southern Arizona dedicated to the diagnosis and
treatment of neurological injuries and disorders. The Carondelet Women’s Care
Center features all-private labor and delivery suites, dedicated C-section
suites and a 30-room private neonatal intensive care center. Carondelet St.
Joseph’s Medical Plaza II, a 10,000-square foot medical office building, is
adjacent to the hospital, offering convenient services and care to patients.
Carondelet St. Joseph’s is dedicated to transforming health care by offering
advanced technology and innovative services to the growing Southern Arizona
community.

Hospital’s History
In September 1983, Northwest Medical Center opened its doors to serve a very sparsely populated northwest Pima County. Many leaders and citizens had challenged the need for new hospital in the northwest area of Tucson. Over the years the population exploded with new communities and developments and Northwest Medical Center has continued to grow and provide additional services based on our community’s needs.

Additional medical office building
Oro Valley Hospital opened its doors on January 12, 2005 as Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley. Designed from an outpatient perspective and with privacy in mind, each patient room is private. The fourth floor of the hospital opened in July 2008, adding an additional 48 beds to the hospital, bringing the total to 144. In Spring 2009, the hospital changed its name to Oro Valley Hospital. Still part of Northwest Healthcare, which includes Oro Valley Hospital, Northwest Medical Center, Northwest Allied Physicians, four urgent care centers and more, the name change allows the hospital to have a stronger tie to the community in which it resides. Oro Valley Hospital continues to grow and expand, adding additional service lines such as bariatric surgery to meet the needs of area residents. In 2010 Oro Valley Hospital was the first in Southern Arizona to become the Sinus Center of Excellence for balloon sinuplasty and in May 2010 Northwest Vein Center at Oro Valley Hospital opened its doors.

Hospital’s History
On the site that now
holds TMC, the Desert Sanatorium opened in the 1920s to treat tuberculosis
patients. During World War II, the owners donated the facility for use as a community
hospital, provided that funds could be raised to support it. Tucson Medical
Center was founded in November 1943. The first patients were admitted a year
later, and the non-profit community hospital grew to become the largest in
Southern Arizona.
