Gootter Grand Slam

Gootter Grand Slam
Raising Funds and Awareness

Every 90 seconds, Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) claims the life of another American.
Some 355,000 people will die of this condition every year — more than from lung cancer, breast cancer and AIDS combined.
The Steven M. Gootter Foundation has been working to increase awareness of this silent killer, as well as to fund research into the causes of, and preventions for, SCD.
The organization was founded in 2005 after Steven Mark Gootter, an athletic U of A alum who was an entrepreneur and family man, had his life cut short at age 42 by SCD. His family and friends wanted to ensure that his legacy would continue, and to help prevent others from going through what they had endured.
Each year the Gootter Grand Slam brings the community together to enjoy a junior tennis tournament, a pro exhibition and tourney, and a gala dinner. This year, the gala’s philanthropic award recipient is Gordon Ewy, M.D., chief of cardiology at The University of Arizona College of Medicine and director of the Sarver Heart Center. Dr. Ewy, listed as one of the Best Doctors in America, pioneered Cardiocerebral Resuscitation (CCR), a new approach to cardiopulmonary resuscitation that has been adopted by emergency medical services throughout the state and beyond.
Participating in the pro exhibition will be Mats Wilander. A member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Wilander won 33 singles and seven doubles titles during his career, including seven Grand Slam titles. He is one of only three men to have won Grand Slam singles titles on grass, hard and clay courts.
The Grand Slam will be held March 28-29, with tennis events at the Randolph Tennis Center, and the gala at Skyline Country Club. For more information check the Web at www.stevenmgootterfoundation.org, or call 615-6430.
