A Prickly Passion

Jeff Moore, owner of Arid Adaptations Nursery, is passionate about growing cacti and succulents. He is primarily self-educated with 10 years of on-the-job experience at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
As a certified nursery professional, he grows more than 50,000 plants, with about 99 percent of his stock plants grown from seed. Since 1992, his three-acre operation includes plants grown in greenhouses and lath houses. His operation’s main focus is his wholesale business, but he enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge with his retail customers at weekly farmers markets.
Tips & Trends
When transplanting cacti in the landscape, be sure to mark the south side
of the plant to avoid sun damage. Cover with shade cloth until it acclimates.
For best results when transplanting cacti and succulents, avoid using peat moss and use a good planting mix.
To avoid genetic variations, cuttings are taken to reproduce multiple plants.
Seed germination varies and is dependent upon many conditions. The time may range from three days to three months.
The golden barrel cactus is rare in the wild, but it has become prolific in
cultivation due to its popularity in landscape use.
